Interesting that your analogy was clock cryptography and index
calculus.  Mine when I was wrapping my head around elliptic curves
was WWII rotor machines and cyclometry.  The analogy holds equally well.
All of these things are a basic introduction to group theory
as used in public-key systems. Although the users of rotor machines
certainly didn't *intend* for them to be public-key systems...

Maybe a good introduction to this topic would have several fully-
worked analogies, on the assumption that many people would be
able to follow *one or another* of them and therefore get crucial
insights into *several* of the others.
