Unfortunately Kik didn't respond when we reached out while putting together the EFF scorecard. They have never officially said they are end-to-end encrypted and we did not credit them for it. Given how much positive press WhatsApp got last week, you'd think Kik would have wanted to quickly say "we've already had that for a while." The "protecting themselves from governments" theory explains why they would implement it and not widely discuss it to users as a selling point (WhatsApp and iMessage don't mention security in their front-page marketing either). But it's a mystery that they refuse to acknowledge it at all.
